MOTHER IGNACIA - ANG ULIRAN
Philippines
Synopsis
In the 17th century, a group of native women called the beatas lived together to dedicate themselves to the service of God. It was founded by a Chinese mestiza from Binondo named Ignacia del Espiritu Santo. The beaterio became a center for spiritual enlightenment. Against the will of the King of Spain and with little support from the Pope in Rome, the native beatas bravely defied authorities to attain religious freedom and equality with men. As the film traces three centuries of Mother Ignacia's spiritual legacy, one can see reflected in her work, the Filipino nation's struggle to attain freedom, equality and dignity."
