STEENBECK ST701 C 35MM FLATBED EDITING TABLE

The Steenbeck flatbed editing suite is an editing table used to manipulate film for post-production. It was patented in 1934 by Wilhelm Steenbeck in Hamburg, Germany, though it was only by the sixties and seventies that it’s more advanced editions became common abroad, especially in Hollywood.

The machine had an edge over its predecessor, the moviola, since a Steenbeck could sync sound with the picture, play footage both forwards and backwards, and run the film at higher speed. It could also accommodate more than one reel, and had a bigger monitor, simple manual controls for playback, and softer rollers which handled prints more gently and safely. The ease with which the Steenbeck could be used to edit films made it a widespread system of technology until the beginning of abstract, digital non-linear editing in the nineties. Today the Steenbeck is still very much used for archiving and restoration of films.

    Tools and Equipments

The Oxberry is a photo-animation stand, where shots of static visual media are taken to create animated films. While many animation stands were invented throughout cinema history, John Oxberry was a pioneer in the animation field, with his name holding immense value in industry. For a time his company designed and manufactured the best-known top quality technology in the business.

The stand works with a camera mounted on a movable column, enabling it to zoom in or out and wipe across lit, mounted material on a similar adjustable platform beneath it. Cameras used with the Oxberry usually have specific controls allowing for long exposures, frame counters and frame holds, all to create a dynamic moving picture out of static subjects.

Player for Betacam SP (“Superior Performance”). The Beta SP was developed in 1986. It used metal-formulated tape and increased horizontal resolution to 340 lines. The cassette was also larger and allowed 90 minutes of recording time as well as upgrades in quality and features.

Beta SP remained popular for use in standard definition video post-production into the 2000s. However, consumers could not record using Betacam SP-branded tapes in their consumer VCRs because of its metal-formulated tape, so it was mostly used by industrial and professional markets.
